Moving back to Moscow broke my heart, mostly because of my extreme fondness for cycling in Boise (I should throw a Shout-Out to the Ridges to Rivers system, too, with wonderful mountain biking, too). Moscow just can't compete with that, although the new Latah Trail helps (if they'd just get it paved!) DFO: You've really hit on something here, MM. It's relatively easy to settle on the 7 - 10 natural wonders of Idaho. But what about the manmade ones? The Boise River Greenbelt definitely would be in there. And the North Idaho bike trails (Path of the Hiawatha, Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes, North Idaho Centennial Trail) should be, too. What other manmade places would be on a "wonders" list? .
Gazans Feeling Recoil of Attacks on Israel
When the fighters came one morning last month, the Wahdan family pleaded with them to think of the Israeli return fire that the rockets often drew. "There are women in the house, there are children," Wahdan recalled telling them. "You run away, but if the Israeli planes come, where do we go?" But the gunmen went on as planned, the Wahdan family said. When the fighters came back that afternoon to launch rockets that had failed to fire the first time, Khadra, Mohammed's 54-year-old mother, was rolling dough in the kitchen. She ran out to shout at the fighters. Khadra made it to the gate of the family courtyard when an Israeli shell hit. Shrapnel killed her and the family's 15-year-old hired farmhand. "Her last words were, 'Go away,' " Mohammed Wahdan said.
Revolution in the power lines
A QUIET revolution in the way the nation plans for its future electricity needs took place in Holyoke earlier this month, when the operator of the region's power grid held an auction for the cheapest ways to meet demand until 2011. The big winner was conservation. The recent auction by the nonprofit Independent System Operator New England was the first in the country in which bidders could propose ways to cut demand and increase efficiency, instead of just increasing supply. The auction proved that it can be cheaper for a system to arrange, for instance, for big power users to ease off the air-conditioning on the hottest days than for the system to look to other options, such as the construction of new peak-power plants that burn costly natural gas. Looking ahead to 2010 and 2011, the ISO had decided it needed about 1,800 new megawatts of capacity - enough to power about 1.3 million homes.
