Firefighters Gain Ground As Santa Ana Winds Decrease

Helicopters and air tankers dropped 30 to 35 loads of water on two fires that have burned hundreds of homes in the San Bernardino Mountains, near Lake Arrowhead.

"They're taking it down considerably," said Dennis Bouslaugh of the U.S. Forest Service.

Authorities said they had largely contained many of the fires north of San Diego, and all five fires in Los Angeles County were about 50 percent contained or more.

Despite the progress, none of the six major blazes in San Diego County was more than 15 percent contained, and those fires threatened more than 8,500 houses. The top priority was a fire in San Bernardino County that threatened 6,000 homes and continued to rage out of control.

So far, this week's fires have destroyed about 1,500 homes and burned 674 square miles across five counties, from Ventura in the north all the way into Mexico.

Stunned by Lack of Outrage, Not Outrageous Acts

I continue to be stunned.

Not by Bush any longer. There was a time when I was stunned by nearly everything he did. Or said. Who wouldn't be stunned by a president who could say, "They misunderestimated me," and sincerely believe he's on top of things?

Nor by Cheney. His pure evil no longer surprises me, although there was a time when he routinely stunned me. Torture? Torture??

Not by Congress, either. There was a time when I was stunned by that crowd's sheeplike mentality. I'd hear them decry the war, decry torture, decry Bush's growing deficit, then I'd drop my jaw as they voted time and again to give the president carte blanche.

No longer. I fully expect Congress to disappoint, to fail to do its job in balancing the White House power grab.

Under the Hood With Knight Rider 2.0: Trans Am vs. Ford Mustang ...

The goal was to make it look more aggressive without being hokey or garish," Belker says. "Maintaining as much of the original beauty of the Shelby as possible was important—and not just because of the Ford connection. It had to be simple yet believable as a superhero." Once his vision was set, Belker turned to Ted Moser from Picture Car Warehouse to make his drawings come to life. But there was one big hurdle: The GT500KR doesn't technically exist quite yet. "So we had to finish their design first," Moser says. "Then we brought in a prop maker to create side skirts and spoilers out of wood, smooth them out, and sent them to a fiberglass shop to make molds. Once the parts are formed from those molds, we finish them and attach them to the car." One of the cooler features of the Mustang KITT is air-ride suspension, which allows its driver to lower the car's ride height when the vehicle morphs from Hero to Attack mode.

Stylish 1919 townhouse

Just like scoping out the perfect shot, professional photographers Joseph and Anne Sachs allowed themselves time to find exactly what they wanted in a home. Having rented for many years in Baltimore's Roland Park neighborhood, they were seeking something with similar ambience.

"We wanted something with character," said Anne Sachs, co-owner, along with her husband, of Artful Weddings by Sachs Photography. "A classic-style house, with hardwood floors, high ceilings and a fireplace."

What they eventually found was a three-story red brick Georgian-style townhouse on Newland Road in the southeast corner of the city's Guilford neighborhood. Built in 1919, the home features slate roofing, white wood trim, a screened front patio porch and a third floor with dormers.

I know that not smoking is better for your health, I dont' smoke, but is it right to tell other people that they CAN'T? Isn't this taking AWAY their rights and freedoms? If smoke bothers me, I move to a different spot. If someone is old enough to vote, fight for our country, drink, and buy cigs. legally.....Leave them ALONE!!! " .
