Earned income credit aids low-wage workers - if they take it

Lucy Crane, project director for the EITC regional initiative at the United Way of Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky, said roughly 15 percent to 20 percent of eligible local households don't file and claim the tax credit - leaving an estimated $20 million on the table.

"We find a lot of people that don't claim the credit aren't filing taxes period - people think they didn't make much last year, so they won't owe taxes," she said, adding that the irony is they don't realize they are eligible to get money.

Of the 4,500 free tax returns processed by the coalition of community groups in the region, the earned income credit provided the biggest boost. The tax credit delivered almost $2.1 million to those 4,500 households - roughly 39 percent of the $5.4 million in total refunds garnered by those households.

Deal signed for Perkins plant

After four months of deliberation, Delphi Corp. has chosen a potential buyer.

Delphi Corp. entered into a $44.2 million asset sale and purchase agreement Wednesday with Cleveland-based Resilience Capital Partners for the sale of its wheel bearings business.

There are a few more hurdles to clear before closing the sale with Resilience Capital Partners.

Delphi Corp. filed a motion at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York to request a bidding procedures hearing on Jan. 25. The bidding procedures hearing will allow other businesses interested in acquiring the plant a chance to outbid Resilience Capital Partners. If no other company bids on the property, a final sale hearing will be set sometime in the first quarter.

Former Scottsdale apartment complex in limbo

A downtown Scottsdale apartment complex that was slated to be razed for a high-rise condo project continues to sit dark and vacant, leading to speculation that the owner is looking to unload the property.

International Capital Partners of Scottsdale purchased the former Orchidtree Apartments in late 2006 and evicted the tenants last year because of costly air-conditioning repair issues.

The company did not say the 10-acre site at the southeast corner of 68th Street and Camelback Road is on the market, but would not rule out that a sale could take place.

Should the opportunity arise to sell rather than redevelop, well consider it, said James Petersen, ICPs marketing director. But at the present time, we continue to view Orchidtree as an incredibly important redevelopment piece to the future of downtown Scottsdale.
