| American Standard finishes year with Trane ride
It has been anything but a standard year for American Standard. The Piscataway-based company completed the sale of its renowned bath and kitchen business and spun off its vehicle-control systems operation to focus solely on its more-profitable air-conditioning and heating systems. And Wednesday, it completed its three-way business split by announcing its name change to Trane, to identify with its popular HVAC brand. "Everyone has been clearly focused on the separation plan, and we're in the final stages," company spokesman Skip Colcord said. It was February when American Standard Chief Executive Officer Fred Poses announced that the company, which employs about 1,450 in New Jersey, would separate into three units in the hopes of creating greater shareholder value for its varied operations.

Tesoro, Seawater AC, Hoku Scientific and Wall Street
Tesoro, owner of the larger of Hawaii's two refineries, says gasoline price margins have shrunk so it will make less gasoline. Tesoro says its Kapolei refinery will be dialed back to as little as 74% capacity. Here's an alternative to oil for downtown office buildings. Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning has lined up more than 10 million dollars in equity financing. U.S. and Swedish investors are chipping in for a zero emissions seawater air conditioning plant. Downtown building owners could save a fifth of their air conditioning costs by using seawater instead of a system-based on freon. Hoku Scientific has installed two solar power systems on neighbor islands. Its newest turnkey photovoltaic systems are at the Lihue and Kona operations of Paradise Beverages. The company uses a lot of power to refrigerate its warehouses, since it's the Hawaii distributor of Coors, Corona, Miller and Heineken.
Only 10 of 46 air cons operable at Tamuning Elementary
Just when things were beginning to cool off, things are heating back up at Tamuning Elementary School. Students at the central school are feeling the heat once again, as a majority of the classrooms are without working air conditioning units. (This comes a few months after the units were repaired.) A total of 36 out of 46 classrooms are currently without the services of functional A/C."I told the board I'd challenge them to come to my school, sit in my class and watch my teacher give a lesson, because it's so hot," said Student Body Association president Geawna Hernandez. The outspoken fifth grader had approached the Guam Education Policy Board during its meeting last night, voicing her frustrations. The student says teachers are conducting classes outside because the heat has become unbearable, adding that she doesn't want to return back a modified bell schedule. She explained, "It's really hot and I know that not all of the kids like school, but I kind of like school and I don't want to go back to the 12 o'clock schedule anymore.
UAE gas supply is 2o% below peak demand
Abu Dhabi: When summer temperatures soar and power stations work at full capacity, gas supplies in the the UAE are around 20 per cent below demand, an official said on Wednesday. Power demand and the population in the UAE are rising 10 per cent to 13 per cent per year, Khalid Al Awadi, gas operations manager at retailer Emirates General Petro-leum Corporation (Emarat) told an energy conference. When air-conditioning units worked at full blast across the country last summer, gas demand peaked at around 5.5 billion cubic feet per day (cfd), a billion cfd above current maximum supply of 4.5 billion cfd, he said. "The peak shortfall is about one billion cfd per day, which is being met with expensive diesel oil," he told reporters. Apart from burning oil products such as diesel, industrial users also turned to coal in some parts of the UAE last year.
