| The Development of a Jihadist's Mind
I remember one particularly defining moment in an Arabic language class when I was sitting beside a Christian friend named Nagi Anton. I was reading a book entitled Alshaykhan by Taha Hussein that cited the Prophet Muhammad's words: "I have been ordered by Allah to fight and kill all people [non-Muslims] until they say, 'No God except Allah.'" Following the reading of this Hadith, I decisively turned toward Nagi and said to him, "If we are to apply Islam correctly, we should apply this Hadith to you." At that moment I suddenly started to view Nagi as an enemy rather than as a longtime friend. What further hardened my attitude on this matter was the advice I received from many dedicated Muslim fellow students, who warned me against befriending Christians. They based their counsel on the following verse: "O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends: They are but friends to each other.
Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure
Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting. I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK. Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little? .

AUTRYVILLE — Twelve-year-old Jonathan Pounders probably just wishes everybody would leave him alone. After all, it’s kind of embarrassing when your little sister’s friends call you ‘superhero’ and ask for your autograph. And then there’s all those newspaper people hanging around, wanting to take pictures of you and ask you all those weird questions. But Jonathan takes it in stride — ducking his head and smiling shyly. By now he knows that that’s what you get for being a good Samaritan. Jonathan, a seventh-grader at Roseboro/Salemburg Middle School, was standing outside his grandmother’s house in Autryville on Nov. 5 when he heard what sounded like a donkey braying in a nearby cornfield. It was noon on a school day, but Jonathan, who has ADHD and bipolar disorder, had been suspended for acting up, and he was waiting for his mother to take him to a doctor’s appointment in Chapel Hill.
1824 'shack' matures
In southern Anne Arundel County, Route 2 meanders toward Solomons Island, winding through miles of farmland and a smattering of houses. In 1967, Georgina and Richard Fries were looking for an alternative to the Baltimore-Washington suburbs after a job transfer brought the family south from New Jersey. "We bought a shack and 2 acres for $29,000," said Richard Fries. .
