Davis' family comes home
Yet, the Home Builders Association Serving Portage and Summit Counties and others were committed to doing all within their powers to let in a little sunshine. For 60 days, volunteers from the local building industry labored hard and long to make over a house in Coventry Township for the family of the late Jessie Marie Davis, the 26-year-old pregnant Lake Township woman who was killed last summer. Charged in that horrific crime is Canton police officer Bobby Cutts Jr., the father of Blake, who is also believed to be the father of Davis' unborn daughter. Davis was within days of delivering her daughter Chloe. On Monday evening, Patty Porter — Davis' mother — her soon-to-be 3-year-old grandson Blake Davis and other family members — some blindfolded — were led to their new home, complete with a security system.
Business spotlight: Colonial Hardware
Jeff Allen, one of the new owners of Colonial Hardware, can tell you just what he liked so much about the South Knoxville store when he was a customer. It was the way owners Roy and Gerry Garnett went out of their way to help customers get what they needed. Like the way they would let Allen take a part or piece of hardware home to make sure it fit, then come back and pay for it. "Or, if I didn't know which one I needed, they'd put both on my ticket and let me bring back the one I didn't use," he said. So when he and his wife, Sooky Allen, bought the store in December, he knew that's the way things were going to have to stay. Colonial Hardware, on Chapman Highway behind Kay's Ice Cream store, has been a South Knoxville fixture since 1978, when the Garnetts opened it.

Anyway, this director, this squat guy with a Jewish 'fro and fast sentences, lived in this odd house shaped like a giant golf ball sliced in half. It was raised on stilts off the side of the hill. It stuck out hopelessly just below the Hollywood sign on a foliage-lined street peppered with Spanish Revival houses behind gates, where you could almost hear old-Hollywood ghosts like Ramón Navarro stepping from his swimming pool, breathing in the ivory and cherry blossoms, and heading indoors to mix a highball. The house's interior resembled a kind of opium den, with pillows, incense, tapestries and so on. Only difference was this one had a dizzying, 180-degree view of Hollywood, right at our feet. Stunning stuff. "Christ," Doug said, "this is Hollywood" He could get used to it. Me too.
