Griffey decides to roll with Illinois

I told him when he signs his letter of intent, I'll buy him a car with his college money," said Chris Griffey.

The Griffey family drove up from suburban St. Louis Saturday to attend Illinois' 83-75 loss to Purdue so Tyler could "officially" make his commitment in person.

Griffey joins three other juniors -- Warren's Brandon Paul, Peoria Central's D.J. Richardson and Sterling's Joseph Bertrand -- in Illinois' 2009 recruiting class.

"You've got to look at who you're going to be playing with," said Tyler Griffey. "I think us four can do something here. I'm excited."

Griffey's commitment closed out an elongated recruiting chase. Missouri and Saint Louis gave Griffey scholarship offers while he was still in eighth grade at Rockwood Valley Middle School.

Recruiting bonanza: Illinois' football program capitalized on the rare Saturday afternoon home game to bring more than 30 juniors and seniors to town for unofficial visits.

Kroger plans mega store in Bonsack area

A giant in the grocery business plans to spread its footprint into a growing area of Roanoke County.

Kroger officials said Friday that the company will build its largest Roanoke Valley store on a 22.8-acre site at the corner of Valley Gateway Boulevard and U.S. 460 in the Bonsack area. The 84,000-square-foot store will offer a gas station, as do some other Kroger stores.

The Cincinnati-based chain is pumping $22.4 million into the development of this grassy site, which is near Integrity Windows, a large manufacturer of windows and doors that opened several years ago.

Other retails shops and restaurants are planned adjacent to the new store. Four additional outparcels, for lease or for sale, would front U.S. 460.

Kroger will own the retail center, having purchased the land from Fralin & Waldron, a Roanoke real estate company.

COLUMN: Norman PD slow to react to car wreck

They aren't out to get you and all college kids. They are dealing with real emergencies on top of unimportant calls...not to mention they are under staffed. So, be courteous to the old man having a stroke, the young woman bleeding internally, or the 5 year old who hit her head while playing and has a head bleed and may never make it to 6... because when you call an ambulance for non-injury and non-emergency incidents, you take away an ambulance and medics that could save their lives. So with all do respect, stop pouting. Be thankful that there are men and women who can, will, and did respond.

Thats not the point. the point is that it took them 30 minutes to respond to an accident. Them being understaffed is not an excuse. that's not my problem.

Armed robbery, 10-year prison sentences and the downfall of two Wando ...

Chances for happiness

Beth Anthony hears Mike before she sees him. In 1997 she is a new teacher at Berry Elementary in North Charleston. She's spent more than a dozen years working in some of the county's toughest schools.

But she can't ignore the piercing screams and tears of this little boy curled under the cafeteria table, even as everyone sitting around seems to be doing just that.

The other teachers tell Beth that Mike often throws such fits and that she shouldn't concern herself.

Beth peers under the table. Her gaze locks on a pair of watery brown eyes. The boy's clothes are filthy and he has no socks. "Hey, Mike," Beth coaxes. "I'm new here, and I need your help. Could you show me the way to the parking lot?"

Silence. Then, Mike's sobbing subsides and he reaches for Beth's outstretched hand.
