Saturday Question

I'm almost all the way relaxed and ready to take on the day (as Dr. Laura Schlessinger might say, if you tuned into her program with a relational problem) when I return to work. I appreciate that you folks have played nice today and hope you continue to do so. I also hope you enjoy the nice weather that has moved in on Coeur d'Alene. You can find your next-to-last unattended vacation Wild Card here.

Councilor objects to DIA contractor

A Denver councilman raised objections Monday about a contractor scheduled to get $13.4 million in work at Denver International Airport, saying the company has violated the city's prevailing wage laws and does shoddy work.

Councilman Chris Nevitt ended up voting to grant initial approval of the contract for RK Mechanical Inc. of Denver, but he blasted the contractor as having a bad record on the wage rules for city projects.

The contract is to repair cooling towers used in the air-conditioning system at the airport.

Nevitt said he would vote to grant initial approval to the contract because the work is crucial for the airport. There isn't enough time to seek another round of bids, he said.

"It just sticks in my craw," said Nevitt, stressing that in the future, he wants the city to get more contractors interested in projects.

The C-J's Sunday College Basketball Notebook

The 6-foot-8 Stewart played 21 minutes in UK's 93-52 loss at Vanderbilt last week, more than he'd played in the previous 11 games combined. Five times during that 11-game span, Stewart didn't play at all.

But coach Billy Gillispie said Stewart is improving in practice, and though Stewart had as many turnovers (three) as points in the Vandy game, Gillispie said the freshman "played all right."

Stewart tied his career high with six rebounds against the Commodores.

"He's just growing up a little bit, becoming a guy that's in the February month of his freshman year," Gillispie said. "He's understanding how important it is to be in the right spot and playing from those spots and competing all the time."

Much to the chagrin of some UK fans -- who like Stewart's athleticism and see him as a potential contributor -- that doesn't mean Gillispie is making any promises about Stewart's playing time.

Smoke causes evacuation at Clinton headquarters

A malfunctioning air conditioning unit on the roof of Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign headquarters caused an evacuation tonight before firefighters arrived and found no fire.

Firefighters were called just before 8:20 p.m. after the malfunction sent smoke into the building at 701 E. Ben White Blvd., Austin Fire Department Capt. Rob Bredahl said.

"There was never actually any fire or any real danger," he said.

Bredahl said such malfunctions are common with air conditions on roofs.

Between 50 to 60 volunteers and staff were in the building when they smelled smoke and someone called the fire department, campaign spokeswoman Adrienne Elrod said. After firefighters cleared the building, everyone went back inside and got back to work.

"The only thing we're suffering from is a bad stench," Elrod said.
