Tax amendment's unknowns shouldn't put schools at a loss

There's a lot I don't understand about the property tax amendment that Florida voters approved 64-36 percent last week.

Like how did Gov. Charlie Crist go around promoting it as a tax cut while preparing a state budget that forces school districts to raise the their portion of local property taxes? Is this going to be the same type of empty shell game that occurred last year with hurricane insurance "relief"?

And what happens if you buy a house next week counting on the portability of Save Our Homes benefits and then a court declares the new system unconstitutional? Will you get grandfathered into the new system? Or will you have to cough up thousands more than you figured in annual taxes?

Hi-Point moving forward with new venture

A new heating, ventilation and air conditioning program set to begin Feb. 19 was highlighted at Wednesdays regular meeting of the Ohio Hi-Point Board of Education.

The program is offered at the Urbana South Campus, located in the former armory located along U.S. Route 68, north of Urbana.

Jon Whitsett, instructor, outlined the course curriculum, requirements and opportunities offered to adults.

At least 20 adults have expressed interest, he said, and are applying for admission. New partnerships are being formed with local businesses which are helping in various ways, such as donating equipment and offering job opportunities after program completion.

High School Director Nila Marquard briefed the board on the Hi-Point Hi-Tech program set from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb.

Voters pass school expansion referendums in Unit 5

UPDATED 11:15 p.m. NORMAL -- Voters gave Normal-based Unit 5 school district a solid go-ahead to build new schools and renovate existing schools, but only barely approved a tax increase to cover extra operating expenses. The mood of about 30 supporters of Unit 5's referendum stayed optimistic Tuesday night as they watched results come in at Sugar Creek Elementary School. In a gym decorated with balloons in the district's colors of orange and black, the activists watched results on a big projection screen or huddled around a computer. The referendum to issue $96.7 million in building bonds passed 11,796 to 8,351, and the proposal to raise property taxes by 10 cents per $100 equalized assessed valuation passed 10,402 to 9,888.“We're very glad and happy with the outcome. It reflects the community's value of a strong education system," said Carl Tiechman, co-chairman of the Citizens for Unit 5, from the poll-watching party.

Table Talk

I love to eat at the bar, especially if it's just me or me plus one.

What's your take? Should the bar just be for drinks, should there be some section of the bar just for drinks, or is this just another fight that has no winner?

It's official: Sienna Miller and Hayden Christensen are snogging. View the evidence.

Update: Wrong, wrong, wrong. Although some people would like to think that See-See has moved on from Jude, it's simply not true. The photos on Egotastic.com were in fact of Hayden and his longtime Lola Skye. They were not of Hayden and Sienna. Read the correction.
